You’ve decided you want a new kitchen right? But what next? Here are a few steps to go through to make sure the kitchen you end up with is everything you dream it should be.
What do you need?
Think about how you use your current kitchen and what works and doesn’t work. Make a list of things you must have and a separate one for things you’d like. A fridge will go on the first list of course but a double burner stove top for cooking salmon in a bain-marie probably goes on the second.
This is also a good time to start saving photos of kitchens you like from magazines and the internet. Look for features you like and colour schemes that suit your style.
Set a budget
You probably don’t know how much a kitchen will cost to design and build but you should still work out your budget before you get into the details. No one says it has to be set in stone, but it is good to have a ballpark figure to discuss with your kitchen designer before you get to far into the planning stage.
Find the right people
You might decide to build the kitchen yourself but at some point you’re going to need other people to help you.
A company like ours can help you with everything from planning & budgets, to choosing the right materials all the way to managing your project from start to finish.
Layout planning
Work out what needs to go where in the space you have without worrying about what the finished kitchen will look like. Our article on how to design your kitchen can help make sure your kitchen will be functional as well as stunning.
What will it look like
This is where you get to choose what kind of kitchen you’ll have. Classic or modern? Or something in between.
Choosing your fixtures and finishes includes backsplash, cabinetry, countertop material, flooring, kitchen appliances, sink, lighting, and other hardware.
Finalise your design
This is where the company you’re working with will prepare floor plans and other details for you to sign off on.
Make sure everything you’ve discussed and agreed on is included so you can get everything approved and ready for the next step.
Get estimates for the work
Although our company provides both design and installation work you may want to ask for estimates from other contractors. Don’t be afraid to ask more than one company and make sure you’re getting the best price for the best quality you can afford.
Set up your temporary kitchen
If you’re going to be in your house while the kitchen is being built, make sure you have a temporary kitchen for the time the work is going to take.
Logistics
Finally, make sure you know before the work starts whether there are times you’ll need to be to be away from the house. Discuss this with the company doing your installation and check when you’ll meet for progress updates and what a typical day is for the contractors.
